How to help save the world… one drop at a time

How can you help save the world? I think you can do it by donating to good causes… Like charity:water!

Charity:water is an organisation that builds wells in communities that don’t have access to fresh water. Because of charity: water’s unique model, 100% of all donations go directly to direct water projects costs, and each donation is “proved” and tracked to the village it helped when projects are complete.

My birthday is coming up July so I thought I’d use is as rallying point to raise some money to build a well. The goal is $5000 but between you and me, I know we can totally smash it and build more than one well icon smile How to help save the world... one drop at a time .

So… if you’re feeling generous (and I hope you are!) get me the best birthday present and donate to my charity:water campaign.

Support my friend Greg in Oxfam walk

greg magda carel1 300x230 Support my friend Greg in Oxfam walkA friend of mine, Greg Mullins (he’s the one with the crazy red wig in the photo), is doing the Oxfam walk in Australia in about a month. He’s a great guy doing this for a great cause. You can visit his Oxfam page and sponsor Greg here.

Here’s Greg’s elevator pitch. Come on! Donate! You know you want to!

During a moment of madness I agreed to do a 100 kilometre walk to raise money for Oxfam. It also ties in quite nicely with my new lifestyle and long term goal of shedding 20 kegs this year! I will be part of a team of four that includes my cousin Rodney Mullins, his father, my uncle Pete Mullins and Pete’s good mate Malcolm Pascoe (our boot camp like trainer!).

The walk is through some fairly rugged Australian bush – it starts at Brooklyn on the Hawksbury river and ends up in Sydney.  The intention is to complete the walk in around 24 hours which means we will walk through the night …. Many a man has been found sobbing in pain and emotional turmoil upon completing this challenge. We have started training in earnest and need to be in shape by the end of August for the ‘big day’!

The purpose of this post is twofold.  Firstly, to share with you my bout of insanity and, secondly and more importantly, the walk is organised to raise money for Oxfam who do great work in over 25 countries, helping people far less fortunate than ourselves.  Our team is aiming to raise $4,000 so any help from you would be very gratefully received. You can make donations online. Any amount big or small is appreciated – and donations are tax deductible, get in now before tax time!

Cheetah Conservation

Magda and Blake petting baby cheetahs

The fastest animal on land (and one of the most beautiful!) is one of the most endangered. The Cheetah Outreach program in South Africa’s Stellenbosch region is one organisation doing its part to protect these stunning animals. Last year in October I was lucky enough to pay a visit to Spier wine farm, where the outreach is located. We got to experience a short cheetah encounter, which was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

In addition to breeding cheetahs, Cheetah Outreach also breeds Anatolian Shepherd Guard dogs. These dogs are experienced cattle herders and they aid farmers in protecting their livestock from becoming cheetah food. By supplying the puppies to farmers, Cheetah Outreach ensures that cheetahs will be chased away by the dogs instead of being shot by the farmer. Pretty good solution, don’t you think?
